For the longest time, I have been working on my own and it has been great. There is definitely something wonderful about setting your hours and being your own boss.
But the catch is that you still need to get the work done, and from that perspective, I can sometimes struggle. The work that I am doing today is a wonderful example of work that I do. I have been selecting some BC stock photos for a text book contract that I am working on. Though there are a number of nice pictures that I get to see, I sure get sick of all these elevator pictures that I have been looking at.
Needless to say, I wouldnt be able to have the freedom that I do without my Dell laptop. It has allowed me the freedom to get the work done without being tethered to a desk. I can take my work with me whereever I go. I have done my job at a coffee shop, at the library, or even outside on a sunny day. This freedom is something that I sure wouldnt trade for anything.
But it has been a long road to get to this point. I had to put in years in the corporate world, working long hours and neglecting my family to get to this point. The worst part was that my family life suffered because of my work, and to this day my children still haven’t forgiven me. But it was those sacrifices that I made along the way that has allowed me to do something that I finally love.
It is nice to wakeup to a job that is different each and every day. Some days I might be doing something a little more artistic, the next I might be doing something more analytical – but never the same thing on more than one day. This variety is wonderful. Heaven forbid that work should be boring.
I don’t know if I will ever retire. It just makes no sense for me to shut down the business when I do retire. If I can work just a little bit each day and still make a decent income, why would I quit? I know many people my age retire, then go and find another part time job at a lower wage that just doesnt make sense. I will never be one of them.
So, I should get back to work and pick out these pictures. Since it is such a nice day, maybe I can take the afternoon off. The freedom my work provides is awesome!
